Character Design - can you see it?

Pareidolia - "the tendency to perceive a specific, often meaningful image in a random or ambiguous visual pattern."

For this project, I am tasked in using this phenomena to craft unique characters that belong to a unique world. I will look at various everyday objects, in which I find a face
staring back at me, and use them to create my characters. I will create 7 of these
interesting characters, using a constistent style and unique personalities for each
individual illustration.

In this desolate world, the uniquely evolved animals navigate the remnants of a once-thriving city, relying on items with electrical power to survive. The abandoned landscape, tainted by pollutants and reclaimed by nature, is a testament to a civilization long gone, as a result of a cataclysmic event. Within this harsh environment, societies and clans carve out territories, and the key to survival lies in the scavenging of items left behind by past inhabitants, which contain a precious source of electricity. These energy-charged items are sought after for their vital role in sustaining life in the unforgiving climate. The characters' existence is defined by the constant quest for these resources, shaping power dynamics, alliances, and conflicts as they navigate a world where electricity is both a lifeline and a desired commodity.
Cyrus, a mutated lion, leader of the oppressive clan, emerged from a world of abandonment, building resilience in the harsh landscape. Recognizing his leadership potential, he formed a small clan that grew into one of the land’s most powerful forces. In the same society as the first character, Cyrus draws influence from a cruel past, fostering a familial culture within the clan. To cope, he keeps a journal, a reflection of his tumultuous past that fuels his passion to lead and uplift. Triggers include seeing young creatures in poverty, his fear is being alone, fulfillment found in the company of others, and his trauma stems from an abandoned past.
Cubryn, a muttated bear, born into the oppressive clan, has navigated its ranks, ascending to a higher position of power. Passionate about garnering recognition and dedicated to the clan’s duties, he resides in a medium-sized society, forming the most powerful clan driven by a history of suffering. Relying on self-confidence, Cubryn constantly challenges himself, driven by the singular goal of overcoming his perceived weaknesses.
Triggers include criticism from fellow clan members, and his fears revolve around lacking acceptance with meaningful collaboration. He finds fulfillment in the positive recognition of the clan’s collective efforts.
Caspian, a mutated house cat, initially from a different clan, found himself captured by the most powerful group during a resource search gone awry. Raised in a smaller clan, he honed survival skills that proved valuable.
Upon capture, Caspian recognized an opportunity to flourish by offering his skills to benefit the dominant clan, while acting as a spy for his true clan. Proving himself in combat, he earned his place but remains viewed as different, forming a distinct perspective on his society. He perceives them as a means for personal gain, embracing a superior status despite discrimination. Caspian’s ideology centers on doing whatever it takes for self-betterment and survival, indifferent to societal judgments. Nets trigger him due to past capture, his fear is losing power, fulfillment lies in exploring new territories, and he grapples with the trauma of harsh
capture methods.

Fletcher, a mutated slug, hailing from the intellectually superior clan, displayed remarkable cognitive prowess early on but was redirected from combat to a research role after unveiling the secrets of electricity’s generation. Now, in the present day, clan members entrust him with resources to conduct studies, hypotheses, and reverse engineering in his own research lab within the clan’s territory. He fully embraces his place within the society, viewing the clan as family and drawing on the harsh lessons of his upbringing to advocate for family values and the rectification of their collective future. Fletcher’s triggers include discomfort in large groups, social events instill fear, and his fulfillment is found in immersing himself in his work. A clan meeting where he had to present left lasting trauma, shaping Fletcher’s intricate journey as he navigates the intersection of intellectual pursuits and clan dynamics.
Crazor, born in a distant land away from conflict, stands on the fringes of the oppressive clan, intricately tied to them through his unique services. Gifted with curiosity and intelligence beyond the norm, he cultivated a small business crafting weapons from items infused with electrical power. Seeking survival, he reached out to the oppressive clan, turning their resources into formidable weapons. In this transactional relationship, Crazor views the clan not as family but as clients essential for his personal gain. His ideologies revolve around fate, trusting in higher beings and their plans, showcasing a nuanced understanding of society that necessitates a degree of
selfishness. Triggers, rooted in his past, include water, and his fears center on a purposeless death, while the fulfillment he finds lies in the art of crafting weapons, a skill honed through traumatic moments when he
had nothing.

Banji’s life took a drastic turn after a cataclysmic event, resulting in a unique mutation that left him intellectually and physically inferior to more evolved creatures. Formerly part of a peaceful society of similarly mutated beings, Banji thrived in cooperation, sharing resources in the post-cataclysmic world where electricity became vital. However, the tranquility shattered when the dominant clan invaded in search of electrical sources, leading to Banji’s capture and enslavement. Traumatized by this event, Banji lives in perpetual fear of superior evolved creatures, triggered by loud noises. Despite his challenges, he yearns for a quiet, happy life, holding onto memories of his harmonious past while navigating the complexities of his current existence as a being molded
by a world forever altered.

Ida’s (who is a slightly evolved pig) life before Gelbyn and the oppressive clan was one of peaceful cooperation among her kind, reliant on electrical resources for survival. Captured at Gelbyn’s request, she became an unwilling test subject, facing relentless experiments triggering emotional responses tied to the trauma of her captivity. Despite fears of death and the loss of her right eye, Ida seeks fulfillment and harmony, reminiscent of her past life. Memories of her peaceful past serve as a source of strength amid hardships. She grapples with the purpose behind Gelbyn’s actions, questioning their greater cause. Ida envisions a future where harmony with her kind is reestablished, maintaining resilience through coping mechanisms and mental strategies as she navigates the uncertain path shaped by Gelbyn’s experiments and the oppressive clan’s influence. Her story is one of enduring hope amidst adversity and an unwavering quest for fulfillment and connection.
My final output for this project consisted of a uniquely created world, in which uniquely
crafted characters reside in. The world is one of a dystopian or post-cataclysmic event
where the ‘top of the food-chain’ organisms cease to exist. In their place, a animal genes mutated, bringing to a life an interesting group of characters that feed off of sources of
electricity in order to survive. Living simultaneously in this harsh environment, characters
must adapt to one another and create unique societies in order to surive or flourish.
Created with a low-poly style, my project has aimed to display a unique set of character,
emotion and narrative in order to display this output to the best of it’s ability.
Playing on the audiences contemplation to immerse themselves into this world and
feel the emotions of adversity, abandonment, societal structures & cultures
and survival.
